Facilitating structures - Reward and recognition

In organisations, two of the most significant factors affecting behaviour are what you measure and what you reward. This is because you tend to get what you measure and reward. If you measure expenditure and reward people for reducing expenditure, expenditure should reduce. If you measure innovation and reward the development of successful new products, you will begin to see more activities qualifying as innovations and more successful new products developed. In order to make changes, therefore, you will have to assess and align what is currently measured and rewarded with your performance measurement and remuneration systems - and your values and philosophy regarding intrinsic and extrinsic reward systems..
